Meet Dodong, Bitoy, and Inday (March 2009). These are one of the VERY MANY homeless children (whose parents are homeless too) hanging out outside of my university back in the Philippines (Ateneo de Davao Univeristy). When I had the time, I used to talk/hang out with them and they always ask me for spare change but I never give them any money but instead I take them to the nearest convenience stores/bakery and feed them.
The reason why I don’t give them money is because most of these kids will use it to buy this adhesive we call “rugby” which is a powerful inhalant that they use to “forget” hunger for days. These kids only get to eat ONCE every 3 (when they get lucky) to 5 days  or when I’m around I try my best to find time to feed them everyday. That’s not really a permanent solution but hey, I was in college and there was only so much I could do. So resorting to use the spare change they get to buy those inhalants that could last them for weeks instead of buying themselves a piece of bread, are for them, the best choice to get by.
It’s very heartbreaking to see these children starve for days and turn into inhalant abuse just because we are trapped in a society that supports an oppressive capitalistic system. There was a time where I couldn’t eat for days just thinking about these children. And every time I have a meal I was thinking about how many kids just outside my university wonder what it’s like to live a life having the luxury to eat three times a day (yes, that is a luxury for them).
In the same way I get upset when I see very wasteful people (whether it be food, electricity, etc.) because clearly they don’t realize how privileged they are and fail to acknowledge that our resources aren’t infinite. It pisses me off when some ungrateful shitty bratty person rants about not getting something they want for a birthday/christmas/whateverthefuckholiday present. That arrogant false sense of entitlement is what really sends me overdosing in rageahol all the time. I wish people would be more appreciative with their relatively more comfortable life. I know middle class people have struggles too and do not necessarily have it “easier” but theirs are *relatively* livable compared to these people who could barely have anything to eat and have no definite access to clean potable water nor shelter/heat. Check your privilege, appreciate it and use it to help those who don’t have the same socioeconomic status as yours.
